Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men?s Soccer Team (7-5-3, 3-2-2) lost just its second home match of the 2009 season in heartbreaking fashion to SAC-foe Wingate University (9-3, 5-1), 2-1, in double overtime on Wednesday night at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex.
Junior forward Dave Bailey (Bath, ENGLAND) led L-R with the lone tally, giving him a team-high 12 goals on the year.
After a stalemate in over an hour of action, Bailey broke the silence for L-R in the 64th minute.? He collected a pass from junior John Ferguson (Fife, SCOTLAND), took a touch and laced a shot from 15 yards out on the right side into the upper near corner for the 1-0 lead.
Wingate turned up its tempo entering the final ten minutes.? At the 87:43 mark, senior forward Junior Nyemb (Douala, CAMEROON) took a pass from freshman midfielder Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) at the top of the penalty area and placed a dart into the top right corner to tie the match at one?and to force?overtime.
The first overtime period was fast-paced and frantic as each team put together good scoring chances.?? The Bears had two shots blocked by Wingate defenders while the Bulldogs? Paulo Brunetto (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) and Luke Mullholland (Preston, ENGLAND) each had shots turned away by L-R senior goalkeeper Francisco Banuelos (Guadalajara, MEXICO).
Only 30 seconds into the second overtime at the 100:30 mark, a long throw by sophomore defender Thomas Poole (Birmingham, ENGLAND) got through the L-R box and Brunetto was on the end of it to head in?the game-winner.
L-R was outshot for just the third time this season as Wingate bested them 22-16 in that category.
Banuelos made four saves for L-R despite the loss while junior Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) made three saves for Wingate in the victory
L-R returns to action next Wednesday as they head to Belmont, N.C. to take on Belmont Abbey College in a non-conference fixture.? Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.? Wingate will play at Mars Hill College on Friday beginning at 7:30 p.m.?
