Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Tops Mars Hill, 4-1, With First-Half Flurry

Freshman Elizabeth Hawes (No. 4) scored twice while sophomores Catherine Hauck (No. 6) and Laura Linehan (No. 11) each had a goal and an assist as L-R beat Mars Hill, 4-1, Friday in a SAC road match.

Mars Hill, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women?s Soccer Team (12-6, 3-4) snapped a three-game losing streak on the road Friday night by knocking off South Atlantic Conference-foe Mars Hill College (2-14-1, 0-6-1), 4-1.

Freshman striker Elizabeth Hawes (Valdese, N.C.) led the Bears with her fifth multi-goal game of the season with two goals in the win while sophomores Catherine Hauck (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif.) each had an assist and a goal.? Hawes now has a team-leading 17 goals on the year.

At the 12:36 mark, Linehan launched a shot on target from 20 yards out and Hauck deflected it in for the 1-0 lead.? The goal marks the sixth game in the last eight where the Bears have struck first inside the 16th minute.

Mars Hill wasted no time getting the equalizer as Caity Murnahan (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) finished a cross from junior midfielder Abby Martin (Greer, S.C.) at the 14:36 mark to tie the game at one.

The Bears answered with an offensive onslaught led by Hawes.? At the 29:30 mark, senior defender Shannon Agnew put a ball across the face of the Mars Hill goal where Hawes headed it home for the 2-1 lead.

A little over a minute later at 30:36, Hauck served a ball in for Linehan, who buried it to put L-R up 3-1.

Just three and a half minutes later at 33:58, Hawes took a pass from sophomore midfielder Kaelia Frazier, broke away and finished her team-leading 16th goal of the season to give the Bears a 4-1 lead.

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 23-9 advantage in shots with 13 coming on goal.

Senior Katelyn Burwell (Carthage, N.C.) made five saves in the victory for the Bears while Chelsea Parker was credited with seven saves for the Lions despite the loss.

L-R will take a break from league play as it travels to Misenheimer, N.C., this Wednesday to take on Pfeiffer University at 3:00 p.m.? Mars Hill will also take to the road as it heads to Harrogate, Tenn. on Wednesday to play?Lincoln Memorial at 3:00 p.m.
