Tusculum Men's Soccer Advances Over L-R To Food Lion SAC Tournament Semifinals

Hickory, N.C. ? The No. 4 Lenoir-Rhyne Men?s Soccer Team (8-6-4) battled No. 5 Tusculum College (8-6-2)? to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday night at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex in the 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournament Quarterfinals but the Pioneers advanced thanks to a 4-3 victory in the ensuing penalty shootout.

Freshman Oriol Cortes (Barcelona, SPAIN) broke the game open for L-R in the 52nd minute when he took a pass from sophomore forward Brendan Howard (Tampa, Fla.) on the 18-yard line, turned with a touch? and roofed a shot from 15 yards out to make it 1-0.

Tusculum was resigned to counter attack for much of the evening.? At 66:57, senior midfielder Anteneh Lemma (Stockholm, SWEDEN) deflected a ball 20 yards from goal that squeaked into the bottom right corner to even the game at one.

Both overtimes were fought with grueling end-to-end action as L-R managed five shots in the extra frames to Tusculum's four.?

L-R senior goalkeeper Francisco Banuelos (Guadalajara, MEXICO) and Tusculum senior goalkeeper Lance Moore (Morristown, Tenn.) each made game-saving stops in overtime on shots that came from point-blank range.

After 110 minutes of action, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.? The penalty shootout went seven rounds as Banuelos made one save?and Moore made two.?

The first round of five ended tied at three.? Following consecutive misses by L-R, Tusculum?s Dean Hopewell (Leicester, ENGLAND) made good on his opportunity,?lifting the Pioneers into the semifinal round.

Tusculum will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday to face SAC Regular Season Champion and top-seeded?Carson-Newman in?a tournament semifinal match?at Manchester Meadows beginning at 3:00 p.m.
