Gaffney, S.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men?s Soccer Team not only had to open the 2009 campaign on the road, but L-R opened at No. 23 Limestone College where they fell to the Saints by a 4-1 score Thursday afternoon in Gaffney, S.C.
Limestone notched its first goal in the ninth minute when Liam Garner (Nottinghamshire, England) scored his first collegiate goal on a free kick.
Junior Ellis (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) gave the Saints a 2-0 advantage when he scored off a feed from Ali Benson (Hull, England) in the 31st minute
Nine minutes later, Liam Garner notched his second goal when he slipped it past L-R goalkeeper Tom Heath (Solihull, England).
After break, L-R chipped into the Saint?s lead on a penalty kick from Gary Higgins (Paisley, Scotland) in the 59th minute.? Limestone responded moments later when sophomore Mike Stephenson (Bristol, England) scored to end any type of Lenoir-Rhyne run.
Goalkeeper Mark Davidson (Middlesex, England) posted three saves for Limestone.? Heath recorded one save for L-R.
The Bears will have a whole week to regroup as they travel to Wilson, N.C., to face the Bulldogs of Barton on Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.
