Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Breaks School Record With A 13-0 Win Over Chowan Saturday

Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne Men?s Soccer Team put on an offensive showcase Saturday afternoon at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex, scoring 11 first-half goals and eventually knocking off Chowan, 13-0.? The Bears improved to 3-2-1 on the season while the Hawks fell to 0-6.? In addition, L-R?s 13 goals established a school single-game record.

Junior forward Dave Bailey (Bath, ENGLAND) and freshman midfielder Alex Morgan (Newport, WALES) each had hat tricks to lead Lenoir-Rhyne in the dominating win.

L-R jumped out in early and in urgent fashion, stringing together crisp passes and spreading out the field that led to the first tally.? Bailey pushed the ball deep down the left side, turned the corner and placed a perfect pass across the face of the goal to streaking sophomore midfielder Brendan Howard (Tampa, Fla.), who one-timed the serve into the back of the net at the 5:06 mark.

Howard?s goal, his first goal of the year, set the tone for the contest as the Bears scored at will for the rest of the afternoon.?

Howard tallied his second goal just four minutes later while Bailey went on to score the next three goals for L-R, giving him a team-leading seven on the season.?

Junior forward John Ferguson (Fife, SCOTLAND) assisted on two of those goals while senior midfielder Gary Higgins (Paisley, SCOTLAND) assisted on the other.

Higgins then drove a 30-yard free kick on a line to junior defender Martin Graham (Cumbria, ENGLAND), who volleyed in his first goal of the year to make it 6-0 at the 25:48 mark.?

Sophomore defender Jeffrey Marks (Beerse, BELGIUM) joined the party, scoring his first of the year on an assist from freshman midfielder Oriol Cortes (Barcelona, SPAIN) just 45 seconds later.

Cortes added two goals of his own at 31:25 and 40:11 marks of the game while Morgan scored unassisted just six seconds later.

Sophomore forward Daniel Jones (Wrexham, WALES) then scored on an empty-netter for an 11-0 advantage entering halftime.

Chowan showed its gumption in the second frame, digging in and tightening up on defense, but Morgan would score both goals of the second half to finish off his hat trick.

All told, the Bears racked up 35 total shots on the afternoon.

Junior Tom Heath (Solihull, ENGLAND) started the game for the Bears, picking up two saves in the win.? Sophomore Bart Keeler (Snellville, Ga.) relieved him the second half, picking up two saves of his own.?

L-R will stay at home next week as it hosts Montreat on Tuesday at the Moretz ? Sports Athletic Complex.? Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m.
