Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Continues Offensive Streak With A 4-1 Win Over Montreat

Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men?s Soccer Team (4-2-1) maintained its recent offensive prowess Tuesday evening in another bruising physical battle at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex, taking down Montreat College (2-6), 4-1.? Four different Bears netted goals while junior forward Dave Bailey (Bath, ENGLAND) tallied a goal and three assists in the win.

At the 13:08 mark, the Bears capitalized when senior midfielder Gary Higgins (Paisley, SCOTLAND) carried the ball right at the Montreat defense, combined with Bailey on a one-two pass and struck a quality finish into the lower left corner from 10 yards out to make the score 1-0.

Sophomore forward Daniel Jones (Wrexham, WALES)?took a Bailey pass coming across the face of the goal and buried it from five yards out to stretch Bears? lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute.? Jones scored just four seconds after entering the match.

Montreat?s Shaka Bangura (Freetown, SIERRA LEONE) scored the Cavaliers? lone goal of the match off a free kick at the 41:23 mark of the first half.? A hand ball 20 yards from the goal set up the free kick for Bangura, Montreat?s speedy forward who was kept at bay most for the match.

Lenoir-Rhyne?s defense gave Montreat no such chances in the second half, sweeping away long ball after long ball.

L-R junior midfielder John Ferguson (Fife, SCOTLAND) tallied his first goal of the season in the 62nd minute off a deflected shot from Bailey to push the Bear lead to 3-1.

Bailey rounded out the scoring with just under 10 minutes remaining when he intercepted a Montreat pass and finished with a 16-yard blast upstairs just inside the crossbar that put the finishing touches on the L-R victory.? The goal was Bailey?s team-leading eighth of the year.

Lenoir-Rhyne held a 21-11 advantage in shots including 12 on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Tom Heath (Solihull, ENGLAND) played all 90 minutes in net for the Bears and made two saves in the win while Montreat's Howard Fisher (Kingston, JAMAICA) stopped eight shots?in the losing effort.

L-R was going to be on the road this Saturday but a rain-soaked field at Brevard College has caused the venue to be moved to the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex.? Kickoff time is yet to be determined.
