Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Outlasts Limestone, 6-4

Hickory, N.C. ? The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men?s Soccer Team (7-5) rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Limestone College (8-4), 6-4, Thursday night at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex.? Freshman forward Chibuzo Nwosu (Macon, Ga.) and junior forward Nicky Matthews (Bradford, ENGLAND) each scored twice for L-R, who snapped a four-match losing streak.

Nwosu opened the scoring in the ninth minute after heading the ball into the net off a free kick from sophomore midfielder Oriol Cortes (Barcelona, SPAIN).

Limestone then reeled off three straight goals highlighted by back-to-back scores from Jack Bailey (London, ENGLAND).

After Jamie Smith (Flintshire, WALES) gave the Saints a 3-1 advantage in the 22nd minute, the Bears scored twice just before the half to tie the contest at three capped off by Matthews? goal off a corner kick from Cortes with 16 seconds left before intermission.

Cortes, who scored L-R?s second goal, finished with five points (a goal and three assists) for the contest.

Lee Smyth (Somerset, ENGLAND) put Limestone back ahead at 4-3 just after halftime with a goal on a free kick but Lenoir-Rhyne took control from there and scored the match?s final three goals.

Matthews tied the match at four after putting in a header off a cross from Cortes at the 56:33 mark before freshman defender Sean Rogers (Dublin, IRELAND) notched the game-winner in the 67th minute.? Rogers chipped in the ball right in front of the net after corralling a long free kick from junior defender Jeffrey Marks (Beerse, BELGIUM), who was credited with the assist.

Nwosu rounded out the scoring in the 84th minute while senior goalkeeper Tom Heath (Solihull, ENGLAND) played the second half and picked up the win.? Limestone?s H.B. Lockwood (Anderson, S.C.) suffered the loss.

Lenoir-Rhyne next hosts Newberry in a South Atlantic Conference match on Saturday at 5 p.m., while Limestone returns home to host Queens Saturday at 4 p.m.
