Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Defeats Newberry, 3-1

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men's Soccer Team (8-5, 3-3) made it two in a row with a 3-1 victory over Newberry College (1-10-2, 0-5-1) Saturday evening at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.?

Lenoir-Rhyne junior forward Nicky Matthews (Bradford, ENGLAND) scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Bears to the win.

Freshman defender Sean Rogers (Dublin, IRELAND) opened the scoring for the Bears just 2:10 into the match after finishing off a corner kick right in front of the net.? Sophomore midfielder Oriol Cortes (Barcelona, SPAIN), who took the corner kick, and Matthews were both credited with the assist.? Matthews flicked the ball to Rogers for the goal.

The match remained 1-0 until the 47th minute when L-R scored an own goal after a Newberry player deflected a shot by junior defender Jeffrey Marks (Beerse, BELGIUM) into the net.

Newberry cut the lead in half at 2-1 just three minutes later when David Contee (Sumter, S.C.) won a fight for the ball right in front of the net to notch his first goal of the year.

However, Matthews iced the match at the 68:23 mark when he placed the ball in the back off the net from about 18 yards out off a pass from senior defender Martin Graham (Cumbria, ENGLAND).

L-R dominated throughout, holding a 37-7 advantage in shots, while freshman Stefan Dill (Southampton, BERMUDA) picked up the win in goal as he tallied three saves.

Newberry's goalkeeper, Patrick Sweatt (Indian Land, S.C.), suffered the loss despite totaling 16 saves in the contest.

Lenoir-Rhyne wraps up its three-match home stand when it faces Barton on Tuesday at 4 p.m.? Newberry hosts conference-foe Anderson on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
