Wingate, N.C. - The Wingate University Men's Soccer Team (12-2, 6-1) pushed its winning streak to nine matches with a 3-1 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University (8-7, 3-4) Saturday evening in a league contest.
Wingate's Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) scored twice for the Bulldogs, who are tied with the Eagles of Carson-Newman for first place in the South Atlantic Conference standings.
Wingate opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Jack Vundum (Birmingham, ENGLAND) finished off a cross from Felippe Imperatriz (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) with a header for his sixth goal of the season.
Lima pushed the advantage to 2-0 with just 1:52 remaining before halftime with a goal from 10 yards out off a double assist from Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) and Luke Mulholland (Preston, ENGLAND).
The Bears cut the margin in half at 2-1 just 56 seconds later?when freshman defender Sean Rogers (Dublin, IRELAND) headed home his sixth goal of the year.? Junior midfielder Jordan Holmes (Southport, ENGLAND) and Chibuzo Nwosu (Macon, Ga.) were credited both credited with the assist.
Lima finished off the scoring at the 69:14 mark of the second half with a goal just outside the box, his eighth of the year.
Wingate goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) picked up the victory as he allowed just one to go along with four saves.? L-R senior Tom Heath (Solihull, ENGLAND) suffered the loss in goal despite making four saves also.
Lenoir-Rhyne hosts rival Catawba on Senior Night Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m., in a conference match.? Wingate, meanwhile, hosts SAC-foe Anderson Wednesday at 7 p.m., as well.
