The Lenoir-Rhyne University Men?s Soccer Team (4-1, 1-0) opened South Atlantic Conference play with a 3-1 win over Anderson University (3-3-1, 0-1) Sunday afternoon at the Moretz Sports ? Athletic Complex.? Three different players scored for the Bears, who pushed their winning streak to three matches.
L-R opened the scoring just 1:19 before halftime when junior midfielder George Wilson (London, ENGLAND) finished off a short cross from the right by freshman forward Chibuzo Nwosu (Macon, Ga.).? The goal was Wilson?s first of his Bear career.
Lenoir-Rhyne extended the lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute when sophomore midfielder Oriol Cortes (Barcelona, SPAIN) put in a short shot right in front of the net after the Bears were able to collect a loose ball.? Senior forward Dave Bailey (Bath, ENGLAND) and junior midfielder Jordan Holmes (Southport, ENGLAND) were both credited with the assist.
Holmes notched his second assist of the match on the Bears? final goal at the 76:11 mark when he launched a corner kick to junior forward Nicky Matthews (Bradford, ENGLAND), who received it in the box then spun and kicked it into the net.
Anderson finally broke through with a goal in the 81st minute when Clement Samson (Vannes, FRANCE) kicked in teammate Scott Clapperton?s (Edinburgh, SCOTLAND) blocked shot.
Anderson had several other chances to score before the end of the match but Lenoir-Rhyne and senior goalkeeper Tom Heath (Solihull, ENGLAND) were able to keep the Trojans at bay.? Heath (seven saves) picked up the win in goal for the Bears.
Anderson goalkeeper Lukas Hesse (Berlin, GERMANY) suffered the loss despite tallying 12 saves.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces Brevard on the road Wednesday at 4 p.m., while Anderson hosts USC Aiken on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
