Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Tops Tusculum, 2-1, To Clinch SAC Regular Season Title Outright

Senior midfielder Laura Linehan scored the game-winning goal in Lenoir-Rhyne's 2-1 victory over Tusculum at home Saturday to help the Bears clinch the leauge title outright.

Hickory, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Soccer Team (15-1, 9-0)?rolled through a perfect South Atlantic Conference Regular Season?with a 2-1 victory over Tusculum (10-7-1, 5-4) Saturday evening on Senior Day at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.

The Bears, who ran their winning streak to a school-record 14 matches, rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to take the win.

Senior forward Laura Linehan (San Diego, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal for Lenoir-Rhyne, who is ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II.

The Bears also claimed their first conference title outright in school history after sharing the championship with Carson-Newman last year.

Kim Brown (Scarborough, Ontario, CANADA) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 29th minute after scoring from 15 yards out off a pass from Amy Neltner (Wilder, Ky.).

Tusculum held a one-goal advantage until Lenoir-Rhyne scored twice in a two-minute span to take the lead for good early in the second half.

L-R senior midfielder Mariel Mena (Gainesville, Fla.) tied the match at one at the 55:39 mark of the contest with a goal from about 45 yards out.? Senior midfielder Kaelia Frazier (Cedar Falls, Iowa) was credited with the assist.

The Bears took the lead for good when Linehan scored just under two minutes later with a goal 12 yards out from the right.? The goal was Linehan's team-tying 10th of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Scruggs (Torrance, Calif.) notched the win for L-R, who held a 31-4 advantage in shots taken.? Tusculum's Marissa Williams (Canton, Mich.) suffered the loss in goal despite totaling 11 saves.

Lenoir-Rhyne will be the No. 1 seed in next week's 2011 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament.? The Bears will host a?first round?match next Wednesday.? Tusculum will also compete in next week's tournament.

L-R will face eighth-seeded Carson-Newman on Wednesday beginning at 7 p.m., at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.
