Rock Hill, S.C. - The Anderson Men's Soccer Team (17-3) won its second consecutive league tournament with a 1-0 victory in overtime over Lenoir-Rhyne (9-9-3) Sunday afternoon in the 2011 Food Lion SAC Championship match at Manchester Meadows.
The Trojans' Ryan Messick (Point Pleasant, W.Va.) scored the match's lone goal 4:55 into the first overtime.? Messick received a cross from Lasse Sohrweide (Flensburg, GERMANY) in the box and scored from 18 yards out to the lower left corner of the net to end the match.
Anderson's goalkeeper, Lukas Hesse (Berlin, GERMANY), picked up the shutout win after stopping eight shots.? Hesse was named the South Atlantic Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player.?
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Stefan Dill (Southampton, BERMUDA) suffered the loss in goal despite allowing just one score to go along with seven saves, all in the first half.
Anderson, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, also held a 14-12 advantage in shots taken in winning its fourth consecutive match.
The Trojans now hope for a bid to the 2011 Southeast Regional Tournament.? The pairings for the NCAA Division II Playoffs will be announced Monday evening?at 7 p.m.
For Lenoir-Rhyne, senior forward Daniel Jones (Wrexham, WALES), senior midfielder George Wilson (London, ENGLAND) and senior midfielder Jordan Holmes (Southport, ENGLAND) all earned all-tournament honors.
