Hickory, N.C. - The Wingate University Men's Soccer Team (4-1, 1-0) picked up a 3-1 road victory over Lenoir-Rhyne University (1-3-1, 0-1) in the South Atlantic Conference opener Saturday night at the Moretz Sports - Athletic Complex.
The Bulldogs' Fabio Azeredo (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) finished with a goal and a pair of assists to lead Wingate, who won its second consecutive match.
Azeredo opened the scoring with the game-winning, unassisted goal in the 19th minute of action.
Azeredo also assisted on the Bulldogs' second and third goals of the night by Peron Da Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Gui Andrade (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) in the 27th and 50th minutes, respectively.
L-R finally got on the board at the 73:24 mark of the second half on a penalty kick by senior midfielder Oliver Worth (Sheffield, ENGLAND).? The goal was Worth's first of the season.
Wingate, who held a 19-8 advantage in shots taken on the night, held on from there for the victory.
The Bulldogs goalkeeper, Sanjit King (Mississauga, CANADA), picked up the win after stopping three shots while Bear junior Stefan Dill (Southampton, BERMUDA) suffered the loss in goal.? Dill finished with three saves in the match.
In their next round of South Atlantic Conference matches, L-R hosts Catawba on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., while Wingate returns home to face Newberry beginning at 7:00 p.m., on Wednesday.
