San Juan, Puerto Rico – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (2-2) suffered a 47-39 loss to Lubbock Christian (4-3) Saturday morning on the final day of the Puerto Rico Classic at Roberto Clemente Coliseum.
Lubbock Christian, the defending NCAA Division II National Champions, was led by Hannah Harbin (Lubbock, Texas) with 14 points while Tess Bruffey (Lubbock, Texas) added eight points, 15 rebounds and a school-record 10 blocked shots in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by sophomore guard
Kendall Toineeta (Cherokee, N.C.) and senior center
Chelsey Romero (Hampton, Va.) with nine points each but the Bears shot just 29 percent (15-of-51) for the game as no one crossed double figures in scoring.
The Lady Chaps also limited the Bears to just three points in the third period and held a 39-29 advantage on the boards in the victory. Lubbock Christian held a 24-23 edge at halftime but took control after intermission.
Lubbock Christian led by as many as 15 points – 41-26 with 9:18 left in the contest – on a three-pointer by Allison Szabo (Merkel, Texas) and remained ahead of Lenoir-Rhyne the rest of the way.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday, November 30, when the Bears travel to Harrogate, Tenn., to take on Lincoln Memorial beginning at 5:30 p.m. Lubbock Christian faces Southwest Baptist in Bolivar, Mo., on Thursday, December 1, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
