Belmont, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Lacrosse Team (0-2) put on a furious rally in the final period but fell short to Belmont Abbey (2-0), 11-10, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Crusaders were led by Connor Sellars (Brampton, Ontario, CANADA) and Callum Tanner (Victoria, British Columbia) with three goals each as Belmont Abbey raced to an 11-5 advantage and held on for the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne, which outscored Belmont Abbey by a 5-0 margin, received three goals each from senior midfielder Carson Sterling (Durham, N.C.) and junior attacker Mike Hanlon (Haymarket, Va.) in the setback.
The Bears cut the lead to 11-10 on goal by senior attacker Taylor Thilo (Greensboro, N.C.) with 5:19 left in the fourth period and had three more shots on goal but the Crusaders prevailed.
Belmont Abbey's goalkeeper, Harley Whitham (Elk Grove, Calif.) earned the win after making 11 saves while Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Ryan Crompton (Frederick, Md.) made 15 stops despite taking the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne held a 25-19 edge in ground balls while the Crusaders outshot the Bears – 41-37 – and remained unbeaten on the season.
Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Melbourne, Fla., to take on Florida Tech on Friday at 7:00 p.m., while Belmont Abbey takes on Queens in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday beginning at 4:00 p.m.
