Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (12-3) tried to rally but fell short to Salem International (2-9), 7-6, Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of a weekend series at Bears Field.
The Tigers ran out to a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first inning and held the lead the rest of the way in the win.
After Santino Alteri's (Watertown, N.Y.) RBI single in the top of the sixth inning gave Salem International a 7-2 lead, Lenoir-Rhyne responded with the final four runs of the contest but fell just short.
A run-scoring double by Lenoir-Rhyne freshman catcher Zack Shoemaker (Colfax, N.C.) cut the margin to 7-6 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Salem International's Kevin Ortiz (Orlando, Fla.) registered the final out with runners on second and third for the save.
Zack Skipper (Las Vegas, Nev.) (1-3) pitched seven innings and earned the victory while Rahul Badve (Mississauga, Ontario) and Sean Deviney (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) both drove in two runs to lead the Tigers offensively.
Lenoir-Rhyne lost despite three hits and an RBI by both senior second baseman Ryan Perkins (Woodruff, S.C.) and senior designated hitter Will Thompson (Spartanburg, S.C.). Sophomore Hunter Martin (Stanfield, N.C.) (1-1) took the loss for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to take on Pfeiffer on Wednesday afternoon at Bears Field beginning at 4:00 p.m. Salem International plays at Chowan in a doubleheader in Murfreesboro, N.C., on Saturday at Noon.
