Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Opens Season With Victories Over Glenville State And Mount Olive

Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (2-0) opened the 2016 season with victories over Glenville State and Mount Olive by scores of 9-1 and 14-10, respectively, Saturday afternoon at Bears Field.

The Bears were powered by three home runs – courtesy of senior catcher Sarah Kenley (Charlotte, N.C.), senior outfielder Ashley Oliver (Newton, N.C.) and junior first baseman Sydney Landreth (Disputanta, Va.) – in run-ruling the Pioneers.

Landreth drove in three runs while freshman Emily Kenley (Charlotte, N.C.) (1-0) earned the win on the mound.  Glenville State's Samantha Weaver (Wadsworth, Ohio) fell to 0-1 after taking the loss.

The Bears were able to take a high-scoring affair over the Trojans behind Sarah Kenley, who hit a two-run home run and finished with a game-high four runs batted in.

Trailing by a 6-3 score, the Bears took the lead for good with a six-run third inning highlighted by a two-run double from sophomore catcher Mackenzie Cates (Efland, N.C.).

Lenoir-Rhyne senior outfielder and third baseman Jordin Phillips (Hampstead, N.C.) added two hits and two RBI while freshman Ty Triplett (Valdese, N.C.) (1-0) was credited with the win.

For Mount Olive, Savannah Becker (Milford, Del.) led the way offensively with four hits while driving in two runs.  The Trojans' Madison Johnston (Wilmington, N.C.) fell to 0-1 after taking the loss.  Mount Olive also committed four errors while just one run was earned for the Bears.
