Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (4-1) took the third and final game over Glenville State (0-3), 10-2, Sunday afternoon to complete the weekend series sweep of the Pioneers.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior shortstop Matthew De La Rosa (Austin, Texas) hit two home runs and finished with five runs batted in as the Bears nearly posted their third consecutive shutout over Glenville State.
De La Rosa hit consecutive two-run home runs in the third and fourth innings, respectively, as the Bears jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after four frames and cruised to the victory.
Glenville State finally got on the board thanks to a two-run double by Sam Hanke (Kingsville, Md.) in the top of the ninth inning with two outs.
On the mound, Lenoir-Rhyne freshman Hunter Martin (Stanfield, N.C.) (1-0) was credited with the victory while Glenville State's Wesley Stauffer (Orrville, Ohio) took the setback.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior third baseman David Newcomer (Archdale, N.C.) finished with three hits and a run batted in as the Bears pounded out 17 hits for their third consecutive victory.
Four players also totaled two hits and two runs scored for the Bears: freshman outfielder Justin Dean (Mauldin, S.C.) senior designated hitter Ryan Perkins (Woodruff, S.C.), senior first baseman Colby Dishmond (Statesville, N.C.) and De La Rosa.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to take on Limestone at Bears Field Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Glenville State hosts Barton next Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m., in a doubleheader.
