Hickory, N.C. – The Florida Southern Women's Lacrosse Team (7-3), ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, ran off 14 straight goals to down Lenoir-Rhyne (6-5), 17-6, Saturday afternoon at Moretz Stadium.
Four players scored a pair of goals for the Mocs – Cayla Shawfield (Oviedo, Fla.), Kendall Kerge (Edgewater, Md.), Casey O'Brien (Morris Plains, N.J.) and Emily Santoli (Fort Salonga, N.Y.) – in the victory.
Lenoir-Rhyne led by a 3-1 margin just under seven minutes into the contest which included two goals from sophomore midfielder Aubriana Benedetto (Rochester, N.Y.) before Florida Southern took control with a 14-0 run over both periods of play.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior attacker Torrey Schwitkis (San Diego, Calif.) added two goals to increase her team-leading total on the season to 29 despite the loss.
Shawfield also had four of the Mocs' 13 assists as Florida Southern held the edge in both shots taken (44-12) and ground balls (30-24).
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Ines Flueck (Coppell, Texas) suffered the loss in goal despite totaling 16 saves on the day. Florida Southern's goalkeeper, Taylor Gillis (Bel Air, Md.), earned the victory. Gillis made three saves against the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne takes on Brevard in a South Atlantic Conference contest on Monday at 4:00 p.m., in Brevard, N.C. Florida Southern hosts third-ranked Lindenwood (Missouri) on Thursday beginning at 7:00 p.m.
