Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne University Women's Lacrosse Team (8-5, 5-0) put away Newberry (5-7, 1-4) by a 20-2 score in a South Atlantic Conference game Wednesday afternoon at Moretz Stadium.

Lenoir-Rhyne senior midfielder Claire Wach (Cary, N.C.) scored a game-high seven goals while freshman attacker Gabby Sousa (Delran, N.J.) scored five times – all in the second half – as the Bears moved into a first-place tie in the league standings with Queens.

Sophomore midfielder Aubriana Benedetto (Rochester, N.Y.) added three goals and three assists for the Bears, who put the game away early with five goals in the first six minutes of the contest.

Ajahna Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and Alexis Kahler (West Bloomfield, N.J.) scored for Newberry in the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne junior attacker Torrey Schwitkis (San Diego, Calif.) added three goals to increase her team-leading total on the year to 35 while the Bears held big advantages in both shots taken (47-10) and ground balls (49-22) in the victory.

Lenoir-Rhyne scored 10 goals in both halves while sophomore goalkeeper Ines Flueck (Coppell, Texas) earned the win after picking up five saves.  Newberry's Brandy Bowman (Irvine, Calif.) put up a valiant effort but suffered the setback despite making 19 stops on the afternoon.

Lenoir-Rhyne next travels to Charlotte, N.C., to take on Queens in a South Atlantic Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.  Newberry hosts Wingate in a league game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
