Mars Hill, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team (3-7, 1-2) picked up its first South Atlantic Conference win of the year with a 3-2 road triumph over Mars Hill (1-5, 0-3) Friday night at Stanford Arena.
The Bears defeated the Lions by scores of 19-25, 25-15, 18-25, 25-14 and 17-15 on the night. Lenoir-Rhyne has now played in three consecutive five-set league matches.
Lenoir-Rhyne junior outside hitter Brooke Redmond (Statesville, N.C.) finished with a double-double – 15 kills and 20 digs – while junior defensive specialist Ashley Markland (Conover, N.C.) had a team-high 26 digs in the win.
Mars Hill's Rebecca Butler (Bradenton, Fla.) totaled 16 kills and 20 digs while Sara Fahrenbrook (Golden, Colo.) dished out 41 assists in the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore setter Jessica Funk (East Bend, N.C.) added 21 assists for the Bears, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take the fourth and fifth sets for the win. Lenoir-Rhyne was also aided by 12 service aces and limited Mars Hill to a .056 hitting percentage.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces Tusculum in a South Atlantic Conference match on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., in Greeneville, Tenn., while Mars Hill hosts league-foe Brevard Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., as well.
