Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team (4-9, 2-4) suffered a 3-1 setback to Newberry (6-8, 3-3) in a South Atlantic Conference match Saturday afternoon at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
The Wolves defeated the Bears by scores of 25-19, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-18 and won their second straight contest.
Four players finished in double figures in kills for Newberry – led by Madison Darby-McClure (Colorado Springs, Colo.) with 15 – in the victory. Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) added 14 kills and 15 digs and Maggie Marsh (Charleston, S.C.) dished out 48 assists for the Wolves, who hit .238 for the match.
Lenoir-Rhyne, who remained winless at home this season, was led by senior middle blocker Abbi Stacherski (Kernersville, N.C.) with a team-high 11 kills while sophomore setter Jessica Funk (East Bend, N.C.) added a double-double – 29 assists and 14 digs – in the losing effort.
As a team, Lenoir-Rhyne finished with 10 service aces – including four by junior middle blocker Emily Steele (Greenville, N.C.) – and 13 blocks but hit just .174 for the match. Steele also added nine kills and five digs in the losing effort.
Lenoir-Rhyne faces undefeated Wingate on Friday night in a South Atlantic Conference match at Cuddy Arena in Wingate, N.C., beginning at 7:00 p.m. Newberry, meanwhile, hosts Coker in a league contest Tuesday night at Eleazer Arena.
