Hickory, N.C. – The No. 20 Lenoir-Rhyne University Baseball Team (8-0) broke a 58-year old record Sunday afternoon in a spectacular 32-2 victory over Emmanuel (Georgia) (3-4) at Bears Field.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored all of its runs in the first five innings and established a new single-game scoring mark. Today's output topped the 30-0 victory over Belmont Abbey during the 1959 season.
Lenoir-Rhyne held a 3-2 edge after an inning of play before putting the game away with a nine-run second inning. Freshman shortstop
Corbin Watson (Eden, N.C.) highlighted the frame with a three-run home run and finished with five runs batted in for the Bears.
The Bears also scored eight runs in both the third and fifth innings while sophomore first baseman
Alex Reynolds (Kings Mountain, N.C.) added a three-run home run and also drove in five runs as well. In addition, the Bears received four runs batted in from sophomore outfielder
Zach Jacobs (Moncks Corner, S.C.).
Lenoir-Rhyne finished with 26 hits and was aided by 16 walks allowed by Emmanuel's pitchers on the afternoon. Emmanuel's Stephen Skeggs (Flowery Branch, Ga.) hit a two-run home run in the first inning.
On the mound, Lenoir-Rhyne freshman
John Grigg (Lawndale, N.C.) (1-0) was credited with the win while the Lions' Cole Pittman (Augusta, Ga.) (0-1) suffered the loss.
Lenoir-Rhyne remains at home to face Limestone on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., while Emmanuel hosts Anderson Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.
