Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Splits Home Doubleheader With West Virginia Tech

Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team (10-1) split a doubleheader with West Virginia Tech (3-6) Saturday afternoon at Bears Field.  The Golden Bears won the first game by a 9-5 score while the Bears took the second contest, 17-4, to salvage the split.

Game One – West Virginia Tech 9, Lenoir-Rhyne 5
The Golden Bears' Jacob Reimold (Greenville, Pa.) hit a two-run home run and finished with three runs batted in as West Virginia Tech handed Lenoir-Rhyne its first loss of the season.

Lenoir-Rhyne lost despite run-scoring triples from sophomore outfielder Justin Dean (Mauldin, S.C.) and junior outfielder Marcus Shoemaker (Colfax, N.C.).  

On the mound, the Golden Bears' Jerod Jobst (Dunbar, W.Va.) (1-0) was credited with the win in relief while junior outfielder Austin Hancock (Defiance, Ohio) (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Bears.

Game Two – Lenoir-Rhyne 17, West Virginia Tech 4 (seven innings)
Lenoir-Rhyne junior third baseman Fred Wadsworth (Columbia, S.C.) hit a pair of three-run home runs and finished with six runs batted in as the Bears were able to salvage the split with West Virginia Tech.

Trailing by a 3-2 score, the Bears put the contest away with an eight-run second inning including the game-winning two-run home run from sophomore catcher Zack Shoemaker (Colfax, N.C.).

Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore Hunter Martin (Stanfield, N.C.) improved to 3-0 on the year after pitching into the fifth inning and striking out seven batters while West Virginia Tech's Jayson Sykora (Spencer, Ohio) fell to 0-2 on the season.

The two teams wrap up the weekend series with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m., at Bears Field.
