Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Wins Twice On Day One Of The Mid-South Classic

Duncan, S.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team (14-2), ranked No. 12 in NCAA Division II, ran its winning streak to eight games after winning twice on Saturday – 14-6 over St. Joseph's (Ind.) and 7-2 over Mount Olive – on its first day of the Mid-South Classic at Tyger River Park.

The Bears put the game away early with a seven-run second inning capped off by a two-run triple from junior catcher Mackenzie Cates (Efland, N.C.) as Lenoir-Rhyne run-ruled St. Joseph's.

Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore outfielder Erin Boone (Creedmoor, N.C.) led the way offensively with four hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in while sophomore Ty Triplett (Valdese, N.C.) improved to 4-0 after earning the win on the mound.

For the Pumas, Ashley Whitaker (Greenfield, Ind.) tallied two hits and two runs batted in while Sara DeMuth (Shell Rock, Iowa) (0-2) took the loss.

Lenoir-Rhyne broke a two-all with a five-run seventh inning including the game-winning, run-scoring single from junior outfielder Christina Walker (Roxboro, N.C.).

Sophomore Brandi Parks (Roaring River, N.C.) improved to 7-0 on the year after going the distance and allowing just one earned run while Cates and senior catcher Sarah Kenley (Charlotte, N.C.) both drove in two runs for the Bears in the win.

For Mount Olive, Jennibeth Burge (Sanford, N.C.) finished with a pair of hits and a run batted in but Emily Chaisson (Stokesdale, N.C.) (5-2) took the setback.

Lenoir-Rhyne faces Flagler (10:00 a.m.) and Augusta (Noon) Sunday in the final day of the tournament.
