Hartsville, S.C. – The Coker Baseball Team (15-9, 7-5) swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader from Lenoir-Rhyne (15-11, 4-8), 11-0 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon at Tom J. New Field.
Game One – Coker 11, Lenoir-Rhyne 0
The Cobras' Forrest Arnold (West Columbia, S.C.) improved to 3-0 on the year after firing a five-hit shutout while striking out seven batters in the victory.
Coker put the game away early with four runs in each of the first and second innings, respectively. The Cobras were led by Thomas Lopez (St. Cloud, Fla.) and Bryson Conner (North Augusta, S.C.) with a pair of hits and three runs batted in each.
Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore
Hunter Martin (Stanfield, N.C.) fell to 3-2 after taking the loss for the Bears.
Game Two – Coker 5, Lenoir-Rhyne 4
The Cobras broke a four-all tie in the bottom of the sixth inning when Robert Lybrand (Lexington, S.C.) came through with an RBI single to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Lenoir-Rhyne was led by junior outfielder
Marcus Shoemaker (Colfax, N.C.) with three hits and two runs batted in and leads the league in batting average (.486).
For Coker, A.J. Strnad (Eastlake, Ohio) and Conner both hit home runs while Griffin Hollifield (Elgin, S.C.) improved to 2-0 on the year after pitching three scoreless innings in relief. Junior
Tad Ratliff (Taylorsville, N.C.) (0-1) was tagged with the loss for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne returns home to take on Lander on Wednesday beginning at 5:00 p.m., while Coker plays St. Andrews in Laurinburg, S.C., on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
