Rollins Baseball Holds On For 7-5 Victory Over Lenoir-Rhyne

Winter Park, Fla. – The Rollins Baseball Team (17-10) jumped out to a six-run advantage and held on to defeat Lenoir-Rhyne (17-12), 7-5, Saturday afternoon at Alfond Stadium.

The Tars' Mike Purcell (Cheshire, Conn.) hit a two-run double as part of four-run fifth inning and Rollins took advantage of three Lenoir-Rhyne errors by plating four unearned runs in the contest.

Trailing by a 7-1 score after six innings of play, Lenoir-Rhyne tried to start a rally with three runs in its half of the seventh highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore outfielder Justin Dean (Mauldin, S.C.) but Rollins pulled out the win thanks to Joey Vecchione (Marlboro, N.Y.).

Vecchione pitched the ninth inning for his fifth save of the year.  A.J. Chacon (Lutz, Fla.) (5-1) was credited with the win for the Tars.

For Lenoir-Rhyne, junior outfielder Marcus Shoemaker (Colfax, N.C.) added two hits and a RBI but freshman John Grigg (Lawndale, N.C.) fell to 2-2 after taking the loss. Shoemaker (.458) continues to lead the South Atlantic Conference in hitting.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game weekend series Sunday with a single game starting at Noon.
