Newberry, S.C. – The Newberry Baseball Team (29-19, 14-8) opened a South Atlantic Conference weekend series with a 3-0 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (21-24, 6-16) Friday evening at Smith Road Complex.
The Wolves' Zack Kelly (Daleville, Va.) improved to 7-3 on the year after throwing a six-hit shutout. Kelly struck out nine batters in handing the Bears their fifth straight setback.
Newberry held a 1-0 advantage entering the eighth frame after Tommy Passerello's (Davenport, Fla.) sacrifice fly in the fourth inning before plating two runs highlighted by Ben Herring's (Hopkins, S.C.) RBI double.
Lenoir-Rhyne senior
Thomas St. Clair (Winston-Salem, N.C.) fell to 9-4 on the year despite allowing just two runs while pitching into the eighth inning. Senior
John Curtis (Lenoir, N.C.) struck out two batters in relief for the Bears.
Lenoir-Rhyne and Newberry will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m., on the Wolves' home field.
