No. 5 Carson-Newman Flies Past Lenoir-Rhyne, 73-48, In Women’s Basketball

Hickory, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team (12-11, 6-9) was held under 50 points for the second straight home contest as No. 5 Carson-Newman (22-1, 14-1) downed the Bears, 73-48, on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium in a South Atlantic Conference game.

STATS OF THE GAME:
•    The scoring for the Bears was limited as sophomore forward Jackie Denny (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) set a season-high in points (a team-high 12) and minutes played (24).  Lenoir-Rhyne senior guard Justyce Swango (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a pair of treys and totaled six points as well.
•    The Eagles were led by Kayla Marosites (Elizabethton, Tenn.), who earned herself a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds.  Three other players scored in double digits for Carson-Newman as well:  Mika Wester (Newport, Tenn.) with 17 points, Haris Price (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) with 15 points and Briana Smith (Nashville, Tenn.) with 12 points.
•    The Eagles held the Bears scoreless for a seven-minute stretch in the third quarter and broke the contest open by outscoring Lenoir-Rhyne by a 24-9 margin in the frame.
•    Carson-Newman took advantage of Lenoir-Rhyne turnovers, scoring 24 points off of Bears' miscues.  However, Lenoir-Rhyne did hold a 26-22 advantage in the paint and a 28-8 edge off the bench despite the loss.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
•    Today was the Bears' leading scorer's birthday (Jackie Denny).
•    The Eagles – with just one setback this year – ran their winning streak to six games and remained in sole possession of first place in the league standings.

Lenoir-Rhyne prepares to hit the road as it travels to Catawba for a 6:00 p.m., league game on Wednesday, February 7, in Salisbury, N.C.  Carson-Newman returns home to host conference-foe Queens on Saturday, February 10, at 2:00 p.m.
