Jefferson City, Tenn. – The Carson-Newman Baseball Team (21-19, 12-10) opened a South Atlantic Conference series with a 7-5 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (25-17, 11-11) Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.

STATS OF THE GAME:
• Trailing by a 2-1 score, the Eagles took control with a five-run fifth inning with three of those runs being unearned. Carson-Newman was led by Ethan Goforth (Blacksburg, Va.) and Brendan Campbell (Yardley, Pa.) with two hits and an RBI each.
• The Bears tried to rally with a three-run ninth inning but the Eagles registered the final out with runners at second and third base. Lenoir-Rhyne was led by junior designated hitter
Caleb Beatty (Falls Church, Va.) with two run-scoring doubles while senior outfielder
Marcus Shoemaker (Colfax, N.C.) added an RBI double as well.
• Carson-Newman's Dillon Cate (Sevierville, Tenn.) improved to 5-2 after earning the win while Greg Valentine (Knoxville, Tenn.) registered the final out for his 10th save of the season. Lenoir-Rhyne junior

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Lenoir-Rhyne lost despite holding a 14-9 advantage in hits in the contest.
• The Bears' pitchers have thrown a league-high 358 strikeouts.
