LR Baseball Splits Road South Atlantic Conference Doubleheader With Carson-Newman

Jefferson City, Tenn. – The Lenoir-Rhyne University Baseball Team (26-18, 12-12) split a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Carson-Newman (22-20, 13-11) Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex.  The Bears won the first game by an 8-5 score while the Eagles took the nightcap, 5-0.

STATS OF THE GAME (Game 1):
•    Lenoir-Rhyne was led by junior outfielder Justin Dean (Mauldin, S.C.), who went four-for-four with three runs batted in and a solo home run.  The Bears never trailed in the contest.
•    Senior third baseman Tripp Hamrick (Ellenboro, N.C.) and sophomore shortstop Corbin Watson (Eden, N.C.) added two-run doubles for the Bears, who held a 14-7 advantage in hits in the victory.
•    On the mound, Lenoir-Rhyne sophomore John Grigg (Lawndale, N.C.) improved to 8-1 after earning the win while senior Landon Whitson (Marion, N.C.) pitched three scoreless innings for his school-record ninth save of the year.
•    Carson-Newman's Ethan Goforth (Blacksburg, Va.) finished with three hits and an RBI while Dalton Long (Powell, Tenn.) fell to 2-4 after suffering the loss.

STATS OF THE GAME (Game 2):    
•    Carson-Newman broke a scoreless tie with a five-run sixth inning started off by Goforth's RBI double.  Two of the five Eagles' runs were unearned as the Bears were tagged with four errors in the frame.  Goforth finished with two hits while Charlie Brown (Sevierville, Tenn.) totaled three hits and a run scored as well for the Eagles.
•    On the mound, Carson-Newman's Matt Bradley (Talbott, Tenn.) pitched six scoreless innings and improved to 1-1 on the year while Lenoir-Rhyne senior Patrick LaGanke (Raleigh, N.C.) fell to 0-2 after being tagged with the loss in relief.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
•    Dean continues to lead the Bears in hitting, averaging .413 at the plate.
•    Lenoir-Rhyne continues to lead the league in strikeouts thrown with 370.

UP NEXT:
Lenoir-Rhyne returns to the field on Tuesday against Limestone on the road in Gaffney, S.C., beginning at 6:00 p.m.  Carson-Newman plays at Trevecca Nazarene on Tuesday afternoon starting at 4:00 p.m.
