Volleyball Earns A Pair Of Wins On Season's Opening Day

PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team (2-0) opened up its 2018 season with a sweep in day one at the UNC Pembroke Invitational. The Bears ran past Lees-McRae 3-0 in the opener and then outlasted the hosts 3-2 in the night cap.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Sophomore Taylor Prall led the Bears with 16 kills on 41 swings, while freshman outside hitter Alannah Thomas produced 12 kills and 11 digs for a double-double in her first career match.
  • Freshman Helen Hamilton dished out 33 assists and fellow freshman Ashley Hawkins led the squad with 15 digs.
  • Caitlin Smirne led the Bobcats with 11 kills and 17 digs.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Senior Angelica Arroyo paced the Bears with 18 kills, while recording a .571 hitting percentage. Hamilton dished out 59 assists in the five-set marathon and Denny posted 10 kills and 11 blocks.
  • The Bears dropped set four but rebounded to take the fifth and final set by a score of 15-3. LR outhit Pembroke .571 to -.158 in the final frame.
  • The 2-0 start to the season is the first time LR has won back-to-back matches to open a season since 2010.

The Bears will stay in Pembroke to take on Shaw and Fayetteville St. tomorrow at 1 and 5 p.m.
