Bears Comeback Attempt Falls Short in 2019 Home Opener

HICKORY, N.C. – After a slow start in the first half, the Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Lacrosse Team used a six-goal push to bring the score within two, but it was the Florida Tech Panthers who added three more in the final minutes, leaving Hickory, N.C. with a 13-8 win over the Bears.

STATS OF THE GAME:
• The Bears were outshot (30-18) and Florida Tech had the advantage in shots on goal (23-14). The excess of shots led to 10 saves for last week's Defensive Player of the Week, Tienna Sieben, who took the loss for the home team.
• Lenoir-Rhyne held the advantage in draw controls, 13-10, and both teams had seven free position opportunities. 
•  Senior Rachel Elmore and junior Cathleen Gaffney led the Bears in scoring with three goals apiece. Alyssa Sack and Gia Colombo added to the scoring effort for the home team.
• The Panthers were led in scoring by Mollie Kaplan (4) and Sam Schiano (3). Kaplan also forced two turnovers and gathered two ground balls while Schiano caused two turnovers and won four draw controls.
 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Elmore led the Bears in scoring in both games this season. The White Plains, Md. native scored five in the victory over Belmont Abbey.
• The freshman keeper and last week's South Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week has accumulated 19 saves in the past two games.
• Lenoir-Rhyne only had two goals at halftime, but picked up the intensity for six in the comeback effort.

Lenoir-Rhyne continues its home stand as they prepare for a game with another Sunshine State Conference opponent, Rollins College, on Friday, Feb. 22 at 4 p.m.
