Bears Allow Two Hits but Drop SAC Opener at Newberry

Newberry, S.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Baseball Team took the early 2-0 lead, but gave up four-straight runs and fell in the South Atlantic Conference opener to the Newberry Wolves, 4-2. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF THE GAME:
•  Lenoir-Rhyne outhit the Wolves, 10-2, but Newberry did most of their damage with free passes allowed by the Bears. The road team also stranded 11 runners in what proved to be a two run game.
•  Zack Shoemaker, Mike McHugh, E.J. Ranel and Clayton Jeffries led the Bears at the plate with McHugh knocking in one run with a double and Shoemaker drove in the other run on the night.
•  Peyton Spangler was the difference maker for Newberry as he drove in two runners on a double to tie the game.
• Paul Hall got the starting nod for Lenoir-Rhyne and had a strong start in his first SAC outing, working 5.0 innings and giving up just three earned runs on two hits. Quinton Driggers got the win on the mound and improved to 4-0 on the year while Hall dropped to 2-2.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
•    Fuller is on an eight-game hit streak and has multiple base hits in three of his past five games. He leads the team in batting, with a .432 average, and an on-base-plus-slugging percentage of 1.148 while driving in nine so far this season, second only behind Jeffries who has 14 runs batted in. 
•    That is two-consecutive strong starts for Hall after picking up the win last weekend against West Virginia State.

 UP NEXT:
The Bears will wrap up the road series tomorrow with a double header against Newberry with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
