Softball Sweeps Pair at Belmont Abbey

BELMONT, N.C.  – The Lenoir-Rhyne Softball Team shook off a 10-day layoff and swept Belmont Abbey on the road on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears ran their winning streak to four straight and are a perfect 4-0 in road games.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

Records: Lenoir-Rhyne (8-5) | Belmont Abbey (6-6)
Location: Crusader Field | Belmont, N.C.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
•    Kylee Leonhardt was the offensive star for the Bears in the opener, going 3-for-3 from the plate and driving in three runs. The catcher added a double and two runs scored to her stat line.
•    Savannah Moorefield walked three times and came around to score a trio of runs from the leadoff spot.
•    Talon LaClair went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI and Mackensi Swain added an RBI of her own.
•    Brandi Parks earned the win in the circle, tossing a complete game and allowing just one earned run. Parks struck out six on the afternoon and walked only two batters.

STATS OF GAME TWO:
•    In game two, it was Emily Kenley who dominated the Belmont Abbey hitters. Kenley fired a complete game shutout and struck out nine batters in the outstanding effort. The redshirt junior needed just 99 pitches to shut down the Crusaders and retired 21 of the 27 batters she faced.
•    Kenley was backed by the first career home run from third basemen Leanna Sherrill. Sherrill crushed a homer to left field in the top of the second which was all the offense Kenley would need.
•    LR exploded for four runs in the top of the seventh on three hits. Erin Boone singled in a run and LaClair was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Sherrill would tally her second RBI of the game with a base hit and Kory Hammett drew a pinch-hit walk to score the final run.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
•    LR's offense pounded out 19 hits in the two games and have now swept two straight Conference Carolinas opponents (Lees-McRae was the other).
•    The two wins run Head Coach Shena Hollar's win total to 795 during her 20 years at Lenoir-Rhyne.
