Women’s Basketball Upsets Newberry on the Road


Newberry, S.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team went on the road in South Atlantic Conference action and took down the Newberry College Wolves on Wednesday night, 69-63, without the help of their two senior leaders. Senior Ashley Rodriguez stepped up and started her second game of the year and rewarded her team with a season-high scoring effort in the win.

STATS OF THE GAME:
•    The leading scorer for Lenoir-Rhyne was Rodriguez, who put up a season-high 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Alyssa Wagner and Madeline Hardy were the only other Bears to score in double figures with 11 and 10 respectively, but everyone that played put in at least four points. That was also a career-high for Wagner.
•   Kennedy Weigt did not hit a field goal all game, but was able to make six free throws and lead all players with nine assists on the night.
•   The Bears were able to take the victory in large part to forcing 19 turnovers and intense defensive effort, as the Wolves were held to 22-for-54 shooting from the field (40.7 percent).
•    Newberry was led by Regan McCarty, who led all scorers with 17 points on 6-for-14 shooting and seven rebounds to go with her strong performance.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
•    Weigt's nine assists give her a new career-high.
•    The Bears have proven to play well on the road all season, as they now own a 7-3 record away from Shuford Gymnasium.

The Bears return home for a SAC contest against Anderson on Saturday, Feb. 9 with tipoff set for 2 p.m.
