Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bears Pull Off Biggest Upset in Program History; Defeat No. 2 Young Harris, 1-0

Young Harris, Ga. - For the second time this season, the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer Team faced a top ten nationally-ranked team and, for the second time, the Bears come away with a 1-0 win.  LR, in their road opener, traveled to No. 2 Young Harris and got a quick goal by Junior Victor Cascon eight minutes in. Then, Alexander Langer did the rest, stopping the Mountain Lions for a career-high nine saves. With the victory, it's the highest-ranked team the Bears have beaten in program history.

Head Coach Jake Winter after the game,  " I have no words for tonight, it is only feelings. Pride, happiness, joy.  The young men on this team played and fought like lions this evening. It is their night. I cannot do it justice with my comments. They were lions."

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • Less than eight minutes in,  Cascon scored his third goal of the year to give LR an early 1-0 lead. 
  • Cascon's goal was the Bears only shot in the first half.
  • Young Harris finished with 21 shots, led by Seba Andreassen with eight.  
  • The biggest of Langer's nine saves came with three minutes left in the match. The senior faced a point-blank shot but deflected it with his hand at the last moment to keep the Mountain Lions off the board.  
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Tonight marks the first win over a top-five team since beating Wingate on September 22, 2013.
  • Before tonight, Young Harris had not lost a regular-season match in 708 days.
  • This is the Bears first win over Young Harris. Young Harris won the first two matchups between the two teams.  
  • September 25 is the latest the Bears have ever had for their road opener. Before tonight, September 19, 1990 at Gardner-Webb was the latest road opener.
  • This is the third match against a nationally-ranked opponent this season for the Bears who are 2-1 against those foes. LR fell to Limestone but beat Barry and Young Harris.
