Bears Open Day One of Bear Bash with Pair of Dominating Performances

Hickory, N.C.-- The Bears opened up the opening day of the Bear Bash with dominating wins over Virginia St. and Johnson C. Smith on a cold Saturday afternoon. The Bears won each game in five innings and scored a combined 29 runs on the afternoon.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
  • LR jumped ahead with a four-run top of the first that saw LR draw three walks and were hit by a pitch. Lauren Rakes drew a bases-loaded walk to put LR on the board and Talon LaClair and Mackenzi Swain scored on a wild pitches. The fourth run crossed on an RBI single from Ashten Hinkle
  • The Bears would explode for 10 runs in the second at bat. LR pounded out eight hits in the frame and 10 straight batters reached base safely. Rakes cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double and scored on a double from Hinkle. After Savannah Moorefield was drilled with the bases loaded, Kylee Leonhardt doubled home a pair. LaClair followed with a 2-RBI two-bagger and Leanna Sherrill doubled home LaClar as the rout was on. 
  • With a 14-0 lead, Morgan Beeler cruised to her third win of the year. Her lone blemishes came on a solo shot to left and and bases loaded walk. The freshman fired four innings and struck out seven, including the first four she faced. 
  • 11 different players recorded at least one hit for LR. 

STATS OF GAME TWO:    
  • Game two started just like game one for the Bears, with a four-spot in the bottom of the first. Lora Beth Wood knocked in a pair with a single to right field and another run would cross on a wild pitch. Hinkle drove in her third run of the day with an infield single.
  • After a solo homer from the Golden Bulls cut the lead to 4-1, the Bears responded with a 5-spot in the bottom of the second. Homers from Leonhardt and Swain highlighted the inning. 
  • Leonhardt finished 3-for-3 with three rns scored and two RBI and LaClair was a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs. Wood would go 2-for-3 and drive in three as LR c
  • Lauren Rakes improved to 4-0 with a complete game effort. The freshman allowed just four hits and struck out three. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Game one was Shena Hollar's 1100th game coached for the Bears, Hollar's record moved to 820-280 with the victory over Virginia State.
  • This was the second all-time meeting between LR and Virginia State. The first meeting was in 2017 in Cary, N.C. The Bears beat the Trojans that day 13-0 in 5 innings.
  • Game one was Leonhardt's 100th career game for the junior catcher. Leonhardt has started all 100 games in her career.
  • Swain notched her 20th career homer in the second game. 
UP NEXT:  LR will host both teams again tomorrow. Bears will play Virginia State at 2 PM then Johnson C. Smith afterwards.
