Gunn's Double-Double Leads Bears Past Cavaliers

HICKORY, N.C. --- Junior R.J. Gunn notched his third career double-double with 26 points and 10 boards as the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Basketball Team handed UVA-Wise its 14th consecutive loss on Wednesday night. The win ends LR's brief two-game skid and gives the Bears a season sweep of Wise.

Stats of the Game:
  • Gunn hit 9-of-14 from the field and went a scorching 5-of-8 from long range. His first career double-double came against Lincoln Memorial on Feb. 5 and he has three in the month of February. 
  • Mason Hawks and Cooper Fowler each added 13 points for LR with Fowler grabbing eight boards. Darius Simmons had 11 as four Bears finished in double figures in scoring. 
  • LR shot 46.8 percent from the field and hit 13-of-31 from beyond the arc. LR has made 10 or more three pointers in 11 games this year but tonight was the first since 11 made triples against Queens on Jan. 25. 
  • UVA-Wise only played eight players in this one and were led by Cameron Whiteside's 26 points and 13 boards. Whiteside went 8-of-13 from the field and hit four 3-pointers on the night. The only other scorer in double figures for Wise was Eric Okenchi with 15 points. 
  • The Bears turned the ball over just 10 times on the night. Defensively, LR held the Cavs to just 35.5 percent shooting from the floor and 22.7 percent from long range. 
  • Wise was able to convert 19-of-21 from the free throw line. 
Beyond the Box Score:
  • LR led the entire game and had 26 points in the paint and 13 fast break points. 
  • Gunn had 21 in the first matchup this season with the Cavaliers and Simmons went 7-of-11 from the field to add 16.  
  • These are the first two matchups all-time against UVA-Wise for the Bears. 
  • LR is now 2-0 on John Lentz Court which was named prior to the Anderson game. 
  • Whiteside had 37 in the first matchup between these two teams.
