Baseball Falls to Carson-Newman in Series Rubber Game

Hickory, N.C.-- Carson-Newman hit three home runs to take the rubber match from the Bears 9-2 Sunday in each teams conference-opening series of the year.  

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF GAME:
  • Carson-Newman did not waste any time scoring in this one. Tyler Thompson swung at the first pitch and took it over the left field wall for his third homerun of the season. 
  • Eagles used the long ball again in the 3rd. Zach Boze connected on a two-run shot down the left field line to gave Carson-Newman a 3-0 lead. 
  • LR got on the board in the bottom half. After Bryce Stober led off with an infield hit, Stober moved to second on a Max LeCroy ground out and came around to score on a David Bell single. 
  • In the top of the 5th, a leadoff walk came around to score on a two-out hit by Chris Caldwell. 
  • Bears cut the lead in half with a two-out double by Xander Ferlenda. The run was Ferlenda 's10th RBI on the season, becoming the first Bear to get into double digits in RBIs on the season. 
  • C-N extended their lead to four in the top 6th,  an inning in which could been worse if Stober did not throw out two possible base stealers trying to steal second. 
  • Boze connected for his second homerun in the game with a three-run shot in the 8th. Boze went 3-4 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in the game. 
  • Starter John Grigg went 4 plus innings allowing four runs on four hits with three walks. Grigg falls to 2-2 on the year.
  • Brett Fulk and Joey Cobb each threw scoreless innings out of the pen for the Bears. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • This is the fourth straight weekend series win for the Eagles over the Bears. The Bears won 2 out of 3 in 2014, which was the last series win over C-N.
  • Will Jones hitting streak reaches ten games with an infield single in the 8th. Jones is hitting .393 during his streak (13-33)
  • Ben Friebel has come out of the pen for the Bears and is 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA, Friebel has thrown 13 innings and only has allowed one run, He is currently two innings shy of qualifying for the SAC ERA title, where he would be in second to Wingate's David Nash (.60) Friebel has five straight scoreless outing for the Bears.
  • Bryce Stober went 3 for 3 for the Bears to rise his season average to .340 on the year. 
UP NEXT:  Baseball will start an eight game road trip with a Tuesday matinee at Erskine. First pitch is schedule for 2:00 PM.
