Women's Basketball Drops Regular Season Finale in Final Seconds

Hickory, N.C.-- A pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds left gave Catawba a 62-60 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne and spoiled Senior Day for the Women's Basketball Team. Catawba intercepted the inbounds pass after Lauren Ford calmly sank a pair from the charity stripe to give the Indians a two-point victory heading into the South Atlantic Conference Tournament.

Stats of the Game:
  • After Catawba took a three point lead with 20 seconds to play, Laney Fox entered the game for the first time all night and the freshman buried a game-tying 3-pointer with eight seconds to play. 
  • However, a close block call with under two seconds to go sent Ford to the line as she gave Catawba the victory.  
  • On her senior day, Karlie Bearden recorded her seventh double-double in her last 11 games with 17 points and 12 boards. Bearden added five blocked shots and knocked down a 3-pointer. 
  • Hannah McClung finished with 10 points and four assists. Ashley Woodroffe scored all nine of her points in the first half. 
  • The Bears held Catawba to just 29.7 percent shooting in the first half and took a 31-27 lead into the break. LR shot 48.3 percent in the first 20 minutes and Bearden and Woodroffe combined for 19 points. 
  • Shemya Stanback kept the Indians close in the first half, scoring eight points on 3-of-4 shooting. The Indians converted just one of their nine 3-point attempts in the first half. 
  • The Bears finished the game at 47.2 percent shooting from the field and 6-of-15 from long range. Catawba stayed frigid in the final 20 minutes and shot just 21.4 percent in the fourth quarter but held on to win despite shooting at a 30 percent clip for the day. 
  • The Indians also went just 2-for-18 from long range but held a 49-35 edge on the glass. 
Beyond the Box Score:  
  • For the second straight season LR will have a winning record at home as Bears finish the season with a 7-6 record inside Shuford Gym.
  • Heading into the post season, Bearden is 11 away from 600 career points.
  • Bears finished the regular season shooting 39.1 from the floor (688-1710) and 28.9 percent from deep (153-529)

Up Next: The Bears will be the #7 seed and will face #2 seed Carson-Newman in the SAC Conference Tournament Quarterfinals. The game will be at Carson-Newman at 7 PM on Wednesday.
