Ferlenda, Grigg lead Bears to Upset of #3 Catawba to Open Series

Salisbury, N.C.-- Xander Ferlenda gave the Bears the lead with his two-run homerun in the 5th and John Grigg went seven strong innings to give the Bears a 4-2 win over #3 Catawba to open their weekend series. The lost was Catawba's first lost in the SAC this year and snaps their 15-game winning streak.

STATS OF GAME:
  •  Ferlenda drove in the last three runs, all with two outs. Ferlenda had a rbi single to drive in Bryce Stober in the third then Ferlenda hit a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer in the fifth. 
  •  Grigg was marvelous on the mound for the Bears slowing down the Indians. Grigg went 7 innings, only allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. Grigg moves to 3-2 on the season. 
  • Bears limited Catawba to only seven hits on the evening. Catawba entered the game leading the SAC in hitting with a team average of .332. 
  • Joshua Lanham came in relief in the 8th, got two quick outs but Indians rallied to load the bases with two outs but Lanham got Jeremy Simpson to pop up to Ferlenda to end the threat. 
  • Ben Friebel pitched a hitless ninth inning to pick up his 5th save on the season. Friebel is second in the SAC conference in saves. 
  • Chipper McGinnis got the scoring started with an RBI groundout in the second after Will Jones and Mike McHugh lead off the inning with hits. 
  • Manny Montes started his second straight game for LR. Montes did not record a hit today (0-2) but drew two walks on the evening. 
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • The two teams played a 13-inning game to start last years weekend series. LR scored five in the bottom of the 5th to tie it but Catawba had their own five-run inning in the 13th to pull off the victory, helping lead them to a sweep on the weekend.
  • Catawba lost their first two games of the season then won the next 15 games before falling to the Bears tonight. Catawba's owns wins against #1 North Greenville and #7 Mount Olive so far this year. 
  • This marks the Bears first win of the season against a national-ranked team. Bears moved to 1-4 this year with two more with Catawba this weekend. 
  • Grigg moves to 2-0 all time against the Catawba. Grigg has only allowed 1 earned run in 14 innings pitched for a 0.64 ERA. 
  • Bears moved to 4-3 in the SAC this season with the win, including winners of their last three. 
UP NEXT:  The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 4:00 PM
