Bears Overcome 2-0 Deficit for First Time in Nine Years

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne Volleyball Team fell behind 2-0 and lost the second set 32-30 but refused to lose on Thursday night. For the first time since Sept. 15, 2012, the Bears overcame a 2-0 deficit to come away with a 3-2 win as Taylor Prall's kill hit the floor to secure a 15-12 fifth set victory.

STATS OF THE MATCH:
  • The Bears dropped the first set 25-19 and looked to get a huge momentum-shifting second set win. The Bears erased a 14-7 and 20-16 deficit to take a 24-22 lead. However, the Wolves would win a marathon set by a score of 32-30. 
  • Showing the determination that has them at the top of the league standings, LR began to chip away with 25-23 wins in both sets three and four to force a fifth frame.
  • LR fell behind 10-7 in the final set but again would battle back. LR went on a 4-0 run to grab a lead before Newberry evened it at 11. LR would score four of the final five points in the set, capped by Prall's 22nd kill of the night. 
  • Prall would add 20 digs on the night. Colette Romp totaled 14 kills and hit a team-high .394 and Ashley Hawkins had 12 digs and three aces.
  • Rachel Bewick continued her outstanding play with 30 digs, her third 30+ dig game of the season. 
  • Helen Hamilton handed out 34 assists, her second-most in a match this season. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The last rally from a 2-0 deficit came against Anderson. In 2012, the Bears would overcome a pair of 2-0 deficits to win as they beat Queens a week before dropping Anderson desipte being down 2-0. 
  • The win keeps LR atop the league standings.
  • This was just LR's second win in the last six trips to Newberry.
  • LR owns the all-time series with the Wolves 36-22.
UP NEXT: LR will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Catawba for a 7 p.m. match.
