Turnovers Cost Women's Basketball At No. 12 Catawba

Salisbury, N.C.--The Lenoir-Rhyne Women's Basketball Team committed a season-high 29 turnovers in a 55-44 loss to No. 12 Catawba. The Bears opened an eight-point lead with 6:02 left in the third quarter but Catawba forced 13 turnovers in the last 16 minutes to outscore the Bears 29-10 and come away with the SAC win. The 29 turnovers were the most by the Bears since committing 27 turnovers against Anderson on January 8th, 2017.

STATS AND INFO:
  • This was the first meeting in Salisbury since January 8, 2020, when then No. 13 Catawba beat the Bears 67-57 in the DII Women's basketball showcase game of the week.
  • With the ten-day break before today's game, today's game was the seventh this season which is the least amount of any SAC team. The Bears will play three home games in a six-day span starting Wednesday. 
  • This was Catawba's fourth straight win over the Bears. LR will look to snap this streak when the Indians come to Hickory on February 9th. 
  • Catawba leads the conference with 12.8 steals per game while forcing their opponents to 24 turnovers a game. 
  • Today's game was both team's lowest scoring output of the season. 
FIRST HALF:
  • Catawba jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the contest before the Bears went on a 23-9 run to end the first half. 
  • LR held the Indians to just five second-quarter points to take a five-point lead into halftime. 
  • Dillinger just missed a double-double in the first half with eight points and eight rebounds in the first half. 
  • LR shot just 3-6 from the free throw line in the first half. The Bears entered the game leading the SAC in free throw percentage. On the other end, the Bears did not let Catawba attempt a free throw in the half. 
SECOND HALF:
  • A three by Harman with 6:02 left in the third gave the Bears their biggest lead of the game at 34-26
  • However, that was the last points of the quarter for the Bears as the Indians used a 10-0 to close out the quarter to regain the lead.
  • An Alyssa Wagner jumper got the Bears within one with 5:44 left but the Indians then got three-pointers by Janiya Downs and Taisha DeShazo on back-to-back trips to open a seven-point lead with 4 minutes left. 
  • LR could not get any closer as the Indians pulled away as the Bears only scored ten points in the last 16 minutes of action. 
  • The Indians scored 30 of their 55 points off turnovers.
ABOUT THE BEARS:
  • Dillinger notched her second career double-double. Dillinger finished with 11 points and 13 rebounds on the afternoon. 
  • Harman joined Dillinger in double figures with 10 points and Harman added five rebounds. 
  • Wagner made her 32nd career start today but the first on the season. Wagner added a season-high seven points on 3-3 shooting. 
NOTABLE INDIANS:
  • Shemya Stanback just missed a double-double with a game-high 17 points and 9 steals. 
  • Stanback also added five rebounds and five assists in the contest. 
  • Downs (11) and Lyrik Thorne (10) joined Shtanback in double figures. 
  • Indians had 17 steals in the game with seven different players with a steal. 
UP NEXT:  Bears return home Wednesday to open a three-game home stand against Anderson. Tip-Off is at 5:30 P.M. inside Shuford Gym.
