Leonhardt, Wood Homer in Nightcap to Help Bears Spilt with Wingate

Hickory, N.C--Lora Beth Wood hit a solo home run in the second inning then Kylee Leonhardt hit a three-run home run in the fifth to help the Bears take the nightcap against Wingate 5-1. In game one, Savanah Moorefield hit her second home run of the season but the Bulldogs scored six runs in the last four innings to come back from a 2-0 deficit for a 6-3 win.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
  • Bears got on the board in the 3rd inning with a Savannah Moorefield two-run homerun to left field. It was Moorefield's second home run of the season.
  • Lauren Rakes got the start in the circle for the Bears, Rakes went through the lineup the first time without giving up a hit but Heaven Maness got a run back for the Bulldogs with a solo home run to open the 4th. 
  • Wingate took the lead with a two-run, two-out, two-strike pitch hit double by Monica Hernandez to give Wingate a 3-1 lead through three and a half innings.
  • Bears looked like they were going to tie the game in the 4th but Morgan Nunnery made a terrific running catch as she crashed into the fence to keep Wingate's lead at 3-2.
  • After Wingate added a run in the 6th the Bears did cut the lead back to one with a pinch hit RBI double by Leanna Sherrill.
  • Wingate added two insurance runs in the 7th and set the Bears down 1-2-3 in the 7th to get the 6-3 win. 
  • Rakes took the loss in the circle to fall to 3-2 on the year. Rakes went 6 1/3 innings allowing five earned runs, the most of the season for the sophomore pitcher. 
STATS OF GAME TWO:
  • Both teams got solo home runs in the second to open the scoring. Raelynn Kramer hit her first of the year for the Bulldogs and Wood opened the bottom of the second inning with her second of the season.
  • Three straight singles by Leonhardt, LaClair, and Rakes gave the Bears a 2-1 lead in the 3rd. The Bears did have chances to add to the lead with first and third with one out but Bulldogs Raechel Cutcher got Kendell Osborne and Wood to strikeout to end the threat. 
  • Bears broke the game open on one swing by Leonhardt in the fourth. Leonhardt took a 3-1 pitch deep to left for a three-run homer that gave the Bears a 5-1 lead.
  • Morgan Beeler (3-0) got the win in the circle for the Bears. Beeler went the distance for the first time this year. Beeler allowed one run while striking out six on the afternoon. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • LaClair came into the day second the SAC conference with a .488 batting average. 
  • Today was the first conference games for Wingate, they are the last SAC team to start conference games this year. 
  • 2015 was the last time the two teams spilt a doubleheader with each team sweeping two of the last four doubleheaders entering today. 
  • Moorefield's homreun in game one was her 14th career homerun. 
  • Leonhardt's homerun is her 33th of her career, which moves her to for a tie for 5th all-time in school history. 
  • LR moves to 4-3 on the season when their opponents score first this year. 
UP NEXT:  LR travels to Mars Hill on Saturday for a SAC doubleheader. 2PM  is the first pitch of game one.
