Bears Hit Four Homeruns in Spilt on Senior Day

Hickory, N.C.-- Drue Galassi hit a pair of homeruns in game two to move pass Craig Sizemore for second on the Bears single season homerun list with his 13th and 14th of the year then Will Jones and Wade Cuda hit homeruns as the Bears spilt with Newberry on Senior Day.

STATS OF GAME ONE:
  • Bears scored first with a E.J. Ranel infield single scoring Xander Ferlenda in the second inning to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. 
  • Wolves responded with a pair of runs in the third. Jack Harris hit is 4th homerun then Nick Butler RBI single through the left side gave Newberry their first lead of the day 2-1.
  • Newberry extended their lead with a four spot in the 4th which marked third straight game Newberry pulled together an inning with at least three runs scored.  Harris' two-run double was the big hit in the inning.
  • Nick Clarno added an RBI single scoring Will Jones in the bottom of the 5th. 
  • Ranel added his second RBI of the game with a single to left center to cut the lead to three. It was Ranel's second two-out hit of the game.
  • Joshua Lanham making his last start of the regular season took the loss, Lanham (6-1) went four innings allowing six runs (four earned) while striking out seven. 
  • Michael Allen threw two scoreless innings and Austin Blevins scoreless seventh for the Bears out of the bullpen. 
  • Both teams left ten men on base in this seven inning game.

STATS OF GAME TWO: 
  • Aidan Baur got the Wolves on the board with a two-out RBI double in the top of the first off Bears starter Tanner Moyers.
  • Drue Galassi got the run back with his 13th homerun of the season to lead off the bottom of the first.
  • Jones' 98th career RBI was a ground out to first to score Mike McHugh to give the Bears a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 3rd.
  • Back to back doubles by Harris and Baur got the Wolves back in the lead 3-2 through three and half innings.
  • LR took the lead back with back to back homeruns from Galassi and Jones to chase Newberry's starter Josh Stempihar (1-2) and gave the Bears a 5-3 lead.
  • Singles by Ranel, Ferlenda, and Stober to open the 6th let Wade Cuda break the game open for his first career grand slam.
  • Joey Cobb (2-0) threw four hitless innings in relief to pick up his second win of the season. 
  • Ray Stocum, Zach Lambeth, Brett Fulk threw a scoreless 9th to finish the game. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
  • Bears honored their fifteen seniors before the game with a special ceremony. 
  • The Trio of Alex Shirazi, Andrew Patrick and Lanham finished the year 16-6 in 159 innings while striking out 191 hitters with a ERA of 2.72 this season. The three were top seven in the conference in strikeouts, innings pitched and ERA on the year.
  • Lanham will finish the regular season with 79 strikeouts, which will lead the SAC.
  • Bryce Stober has hit .370 in his last 100 at-bats for the Bears dating back to last year.
  • Sizemore hit twelve homeruns in the 2001 season. 
  • Evan Taylor has the single season homerun record for the Bears with 17 in the 2010 season. 
  • Jones' homerun in the 5th was his seventh career homerun and 99th career RBI.
  • Galassi tripled in the bottom of the 6th to give him eleven total bases one shy of Sizemore's school record of 12. 
  • Cobb has only given up one hit in his last twelve innings and has not been scored on in his last six appearances spanning 16 innings on the mound. 

UP NEXT:  LR will head to Kodak, TN for the 2021 Pilot Flying J Baseball Championship at Smokies Stadium. Bears will be the No. 6 seed and will face No. 7 Coker Thursday night at 7:30 PM.
