Men's Soccer Falls Late to Limestone in SAC Opener

Hickory, N.C.--Limestone scored two late goals to down the Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer team 2-0 to open SAC play on Saturday Evening.

STATS OF THE MATCH:

  • The game was scoreless for the first eighty-five minutes until Limestone's Tristyn De Laaf found the back of the net in the 85th minute to give the Saints the 1-0 lead.  
  • Bears did have a chance to tie it at one in the 88th minute but Saints goalkeeper Johann Hipper saved a Noah Tiefel shot right in front of the net to keep the score at 1-0. 
  • Then, De Laaf set up teammate Mark Radoki for an insurance goal to give the Saints the 2-0 win.
  • Camden Coleman had four saves on the night in goal for the Bears, all in the second half. 
  • Bears out shot the Saints 14-10 and held a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks but could not get anything past Hipper, who finished with six saves on the evening. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • Since these team did not play each other in the abbreviated spring season, tonight was the first time these teams faced off as SAC foes. Limestone officially joined the SAC on July 1, 2020.
  • This is the fourth straight meeting that one of these teams were nationally ranked at the time of the match. LR came in the match tonight ranked No. 9. Bears were also No. 8 in the 2017 matchup, while Limestone was No. 14 (2018) and No. 25 (2019) in previous years against LR. 
  • Limestone's first goal tonight was the first regular season goal the Bears have given up at Moretz Sports Complex in the last 383 minutes of action.  
  • The last time the Bears opened SAC play with a loss was Coach Winter's first year in 2016, which saw the Bears qualify for the NCAA Tournament later the season. 

  UP NEXT: LR will travel to Barton for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday. Kick-off is at 6:00 PM.
