Two Second Half Goals Propel Bears Past Barton 2-1

Wilson, N.C.-- The Lenoir-Rhyne Men's Soccer team got two second half goals in a ten minute span to comeback and beat Barton 2-1 in a non-conference matchup tonight. Miguel Montano and Victor Cascon both found the back of the net in the second half to give the Bears the win. 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF THE MATCH:

  • Barton did not waste any time, scoring a goal ten seconds into the match to give the Bulldogs the early lead.
  • Bears finally got on the board with the equalizer from Miguel Montano off a free kick from Jaime de Manuel in the 66th minute to tie the match. Montano's goal was the defenseman's first career goal on his second career shot.
  • Victor Cascon then netted the game winning goal in the 75th minute, beating the Bulldogs keeper to his right to give the Bears the 2-1 advantage. 
  • Bears out shot the Bulldogs 17-5 on the night and the Bears defense did not allow a shot on goal after the quick goal from Barton. 
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
  • The game was moved to the football stadium due to field conditions from the rainfall the area has received the last few days. 
  • This is the first meeting between schools in the last seven years. Barton beat the Bears 3-2 in overtime in the last meeting in 2014
  • Tonight's win snaps a four game losing streak against Barton. LR last beat Barton in 2009. 
  • On this date in Bears history in 2018, the Bears scored five goals in a 5-2 win over Newberry. The five goals is the most goals the Bears have scored since 2012, which they have matched twice since then. 
  • With the goal in the second half the Bears avoided being shut out in three straight matches for the first time since 1999. 
  • Cascon's goal was his 28th in his career, which moves him into third place in program history in goals scored and fifth place in career points. 
  • This was also Cascon's ninth career game-winning goal as a Bear.

UP NEXT: Bears will jump back into conference play with a trip to Anderson on Saturday evening. Kickoff is schedule for 7:30 PM.
