Baseball Annihilates Shippensburg to Complete Sweep

HICKORY, N.C. - Lenoir-Rhyne hit six home runs and scored 12 runs in the 4th and 5th innings combined to blast Shippensburg 18-5 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Durham Field. The Bears complete the three-game sweep and win their ninth straight game, which is the longest winning streak since the Bears won nine straight to start the 2017 season. Both Anthony Porrino and Nick Clarno went deep twice for the Bears, and the two combined for 12 RBIs on the day.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
Final:
Lenoir-Rhyne 18, Shippensburg 5
Records: Lenoir-Rhyne (12-1), Shippensburg (0-9)
Location: Hickory, N.C. | Durham Field

STATS AND INFO
  • After both teams went down in order in the first inning, LR wasted no time getting rolling in the second. After Luis Atiles led things off with a double, Porrino crushed his third home run of the year and second of the series over the left center field fence for a 2-0 lead.
  • Things didn't stop in the third, Drew Yniesta singled in Wade Cuda and David Bell. Yniesta also had two hits and two RBIs. Clarno followed that up with two-run bomb of his own to straight away left field for a 7-0 lead after three.
  • The Raiders bounced back with four in the fourth, the first two on a two-run home run from Matt Shilling. Shilling had some words for the Bear bench after he touched third base, and that proved to be a costly mistake. The Raiders added two more in the inning to make it 7-4, but the floodgates opened for the Bears in the bottom of the 4th.
  • Cuda continued his absurd run with a solo blast to left field to get things rolling in the 4th. Cuda celebrated his 23rd birthday today.
  • After three straight singles by Cole Laskowski, Yniesta and Atiles, Porrino came up with the bases loaded and got hit by a pitch. The very next batter, Clarno went opposite field for his second career grand slam, and by that point, the game was all but over.
  • The very next batter, Matt Mackey crushed his first home run of the season to dead center field. It was 14-4 at that point.
  • The Bears added three more in the 5th when Porrino hit his second homer of the day, this one to center field. The SAC and national RBI leader finished with 6 RBIs on the day.
  • Austin Edwards started, pitching the first four innings. Caleb Cockerham was awarded the win after giving up just an unearned run in the 5th. Michael Allen pitched a scoreless 6th, Jackson Reid pitched a scoreless 7th, Joey Cobb pitched a scoreless 8th and Jackson Benjamin finished things off in the 9th.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
  • LR hit nine home runs in the series, including six today. The Bears now have 19 on the season in 13 games after leading the SAC with 63 in 41 games last season.
  • This is the second straight weekend sweep for LR.
  • Atiles went 4-for-4 with three doubles and four runs scored. This was his second four-hit game of the home stand.
  • The Bears have four players hitting .420 or better, and two players hitting over .500. Cuda and Atiles are hitting .512 and .571 respectively, and Porrino and Yniesta are hitting .459 and .420 respectively.
  • The LR team batting average is now .357, best in the SAC and top-5 in the nation.
  • The Bears are 9-0 in this 13-game homestand.
UP NEXT: LR continues the homestand with a midweek game against Bluefield State on Wednesday (2/23) at 3 p.m. from Durham Field.
