Leonhardt's Homerun Leads Bears to 9th Straight Win

Florence, S.C.- Kylee Leonhardt's 43rd career home run broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 7th as the Bears held on for a 5-3 win over Kutztown on day one of the Patriot Invitational. Lauren Rakes threw the complete game for her 6th win of the season while adding three hits at the plate. 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:

STATS OF GAME:
  • LR jumped ahead in the top of the first. With two-outs and the bases empty, Leonhardt walked and came around to score on a Cassidy Wall double. 
  • LR tried to add another one but Wall was thrown out at home after a Julia Mardigian single to left to end the inning.
  • LR added two unearned runs in the top of the 4th after an error from Kutztown's left fielder Brianna Stocklin.
  • Kutztown got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the 5th, the run snapped Rakes' scoreless streak at 31 2/3 innings.
  • A Brianna Hughes solo home run and a RBI double from Hannah Reimel tied the game at three in the bottom of the 6th.
  • Leonhardt then broke the tie with a lead-off home run in the 7th. The Bears added an insurance run with a Hannah Jennings RBI single scoring Wall to give the Bears the 5-3 win.
  • Kutztown did have the tying runs on second and third with two outs but Rakes got Jenna Lipowski to pop up to Katelyn Rackard at short to end the game. 

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • This is the first meeting between programs since 2011 and all four meetings have been in neutral sites with the first three played in Salisbury N.C.
  • This was a matchup with two of the winningest coaches in Division II. Coach Hollar entered with 905 wins while Kutztown's Coach Judy Lawes entered with 1026 wins. 
  • Bears are now 28-16 in neutral sites games since 2015 but just 1-4 this year
  • Bears are now 11-0 in night games since 2015. 
  • Moorefield extended her hit streak to 16 games with a single in the 4th.
  • The hit was Moorefield's 228th career hit. Moorefield is 5th in active players in total hits in all of DII.
  • Rakes' three hits were her first three-hit game of the year and the fourth of her career for the junior.
  • Kutztown was an NCAA Tournament team a season ago after going 33-15.
UP NEXT: Bears will play West Liberty and host Francis Marion on day two of the Patriot Invitational. First pitch against West Liberty is at 3:00 P.M.
